El director, despu\u00e9s de todo, se congraci\u00f3 con los fan\u00e1ticos del <a href=\"https:\/\/www.filmelier.com\/mx\/terror\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cine de terror<\/a> con propuestas como <a href=\"https:\/\/www.filmelier.com\/mx\/peliculas\/4066\/el-legado-del-diablo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>El legado del diablo<\/i><\/a> (<i>Hereditary<\/i>, EUA, 2018) y <a href=\"https:\/\/www.filmelier.com\/mx\/peliculas\/8153\/midsommar-el-terror-no-espera-la-noche\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Midsommar<\/i><\/a> (EUA y Suecia, 2019). Incluso su tragicomedia surrealista \u00e9pica, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.filmelier.com\/mx\/peliculas\/22389\/beau-tiene-miedo\"><i>Beau tiene miedo<\/i><\/a> (<i>Beau is Afraid<\/i>, EUA, 2023), est\u00e1 tan anclada en el pavor interno de su protagonista que califica limpiamente como terror psicol\u00f3gico.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Lee tambi\u00e9n: <a href=\"https:\/\/news.filmelier.com\/mx\/critica-la-hora-de-la-desaparicion-weapons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cr\u00edtica: <em>La hora de la desaparici\u00f3n<\/em> (<em>Weapons<\/em>) es una deliciosa rareza<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe title=\"EDDINGTON - Trailer Oficial HD\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hbu0Ev1Ie2Y?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Pero incluso ahora que ha abandonado el g\u00e9nero que lo hizo famoso para su m\u00e1s reciente propuesta, el director mantiene un hilo tem\u00e1tico que, de cierto modo, une a toda su filmograf\u00eda: el trauma. Y en este caso, se trata de uno de los traumas colectivos m\u00e1s amplios de nuestra historia como sociedad mundial: la pandemia de COVID-19, que todos filtramos por las pantallas de nuestros celulares, con todo lo que ello implica.<\/p>\n<h2>\u00bfDe qu\u00e9 se trata?<\/h2>\n<p>En Eddington, un peque\u00f1o pueblo de Nuevo M\u00e9xico, el alcalde Ted Garc\u00eda (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.filmelier.com\/mx\/list\/peliculas-de-pedro-pascal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pedro Pascal<\/a>) prepara su reelecci\u00f3n, mientras implementa medidas sanitarias y uso mandatorio de cubrebocas por la pandemia de COVID-19, bajo \u00f3rdenes del gobernador. Sin embargo, el alguacil Joe Cross (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.filmelier.com\/mx\/list\/peliculas-de-joaquin-phoenix-ver-online\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joaquin Phoenix<\/a>) argumenta que esto atenta contra la libertad de decisi\u00f3n e instiga una disidencia en el pueblo.<\/p>\n<p>Mientras el pueblo cae en una profunda divisi\u00f3n, Garc\u00eda se enfrenta a la pol\u00e9mica de sus nexos con un contaminante centro de datos. El primero, que la pel\u00edcula ha sido se\u00f1alada como un <i>w\u00e9stern<\/i> (o, en todo caso, un <i>neo-w\u00e9stern<\/i>); y el segundo, que Aster la define como &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.semafor.com\/article\/07\/18\/2025\/eddington-ari-aster-mixed-signals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">la pel\u00edcula que Twitter escribi\u00f3<\/a>&#8220;, en referencia a que, durante la pandemia y desde entonces, las redes sociales contribuyeron a la propagaci\u00f3n desinformaci\u00f3n, de teor\u00edas de conspiraci\u00f3n y, en consecuencia, desgast\u00f3 el tejido social y cre\u00f3 profundas brechas ideol\u00f3gicas entre la poblaci\u00f3n\u2014en Estados Unidos y en el mundo\u2014.<\/p>\n<p>Partiendo de lo anterior, si el <i>w\u00e9stern<\/i> es el g\u00e9nero que hist\u00f3ricamente nos ha presentado el mito civilizador de los Estados Unidos (la dichosa &#8220;victoria de la civilizaci\u00f3n sobre el salvaje oeste americano&#8221;, pues), entonces esta pel\u00edcula tendr\u00eda que ser un &#8220;anti-<i>w\u00e9stern<\/i>&#8220;, que nos encara con la catastr\u00f3fica degradaci\u00f3n de la cohesi\u00f3n social durante los confinamientos, un tiempo plagado de noticias falsas, polarizaci\u00f3n pol\u00edtica y el tenso clima por el crimen racial contra George Floyd en 2020. Poco le falt\u00f3 a Aster para introducir, literalmente, una trama sobre servidores p\u00fablicos recomendando p\u00fablicamente <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-52407177\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inyecciones de cloro<\/a> como tratamiento.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Lee tambi\u00e9n:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.filmelier.com\/mx\/critica-together-pelicula\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cr\u00edtica de\u00a0<em>Together: Juntos hasta la muerte<\/em>: el peligro de la media naranja<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_56091\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-56091\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-56091\" src=\"https:\/\/news.filmelier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/eddington-pelicula-ari-aster.webp\" alt=\"Emma Stone y Deirdre O'Connell en una escena de 'Eddington', de Ari Aster\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.filmelier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/eddington-pelicula-ari-aster.webp 800w, https:\/\/news.filmelier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/eddington-pelicula-ari-aster-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/news.filmelier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/eddington-pelicula-ari-aster-768x432.webp 768w, https:\/\/news.filmelier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/eddington-pelicula-ari-aster-150x84.webp 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-56091\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">El internet y la desinformaci\u00f3n son dos de los grandes villanos de la pel\u00edcula (Cr\u00e9dito: Cine Can\u00edbal)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>En <i>Eddington<\/i>, no propone una traducci\u00f3n literal de los eventos que atestiguamos en nuestra pesadilla inducida por internet, sino que presenta un microcosmos de esa descomposici\u00f3n psicol\u00f3gica y social. No es una pel\u00edcula sobre traumas generacionales ni relaciones rom\u00e1nticas fallidas, ni mucho menos sobre conflictos ed\u00edpicos, con la eventual catarsis. Aster sostiene un espejo a una sociedad muy espec\u00edfica en su idiosincrasia medi\u00e1tica y pol\u00edtica para confrontar las maneras en que se ha devastado a s\u00ed misma, a veces sin remedio. Phoenix, como ambos catalizador y sustituto de la audiencia en este aspecto, brinda una actuaci\u00f3n a la vez cautivadora y repugnante. Se nos obliga a acompa\u00f1ar a su alguacil en todo momento. Simpatizar o no con \u00e9l bien podr\u00eda ser una &#8220;prueba de Rorschach&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>As\u00ed que puede no ser terror, t\u00e9cnicamente, pero el contexto en que el director y guionista presenta su narrativa s\u00ed lo es por la cercan\u00eda de la experiencia en el tiempo, y tanto por sus implicaciones de entonces como sus ramificaciones ahora. Aster transmite este pavor por la manera que filma y monta.<\/p>\n<p><i>Eddington<\/i> es una pel\u00edcula de planos sostenidos, largos, optando por mantener la tensi\u00f3n de los silencios, rostros de desconcierto que ocultan enojo en ebullici\u00f3n, y de situaciones absurdas que en cualquier momento podr\u00edan estallar en violencia. A veces lo hacen, a veces no. Toca temas como la pandemia y la polarizaci\u00f3n pol\u00edtica e ideol\u00f3gica, s\u00ed. Pero tambi\u00e9n habla de las repercusiones de la desinformaci\u00f3n en sus familias protagonistas, el racismo, el clasismo, el radicalismo, la depredaci\u00f3n de sectas, corrupci\u00f3n y despojo de tierras para entregar recursos a megacorporaciones, e incluso por ah\u00ed, abuso sexual de menores. Todas ellas, cuestiones en el coraz\u00f3n de la podredumbre social y pol\u00edtica estadounidense.<\/p>\n<p>Y es por esa falta de profundidad que <i>Eddington<\/i> resulta una s\u00e1tira extremada y decepcionantemente obvia. Al no detenerse en los detalles de nada, todo ello resulta evidente para quien tenga una noci\u00f3n b\u00e1sica de las noticias de los \u00faltimos cinco a\u00f1os.
